Baird Can’t Disguise Canada’s Cons Discomfort With Pussy Riot

“Pussy Riot”.

Two words guaranteed to strike fear and loathing into the heart of every full patch Regressive Conservative.  Female sexuality and punk rocking anarchists taunting the privilaged class, heaving metaphorical rocks and bottles at their black-jacketed, kevlar-clad private armies.  It’s the stuff of nightmares for bought-and-sold politicans of the New Right‘s hate wing.   Harbingers of the socialist, atheist apocalypse.

And that these three young women should have the effrontery to be arrested, tried, and convicted by a government that our Cons are wont to demonize just adds insult to … well … insult.   Damned Russians refusing to privatize corruption and oppression — it gives a bad name to the authoritarian abuse of power everywhere.  Diplomatically inconvenient, to say the least.  What’s a good Harperite to do?

Canada’s foreign affairs apparatchik thingy,  John Baird, wasn’t recruited for his tact or subtlety.  He cut his pit bull teeth in Mike Harris‘ lost and unlamented Ontario junta and rose to prominence in the Federal ranks by savaging anyone and everyone who inconvenienced his master.  It’s not surprising, then, that he seemed to be standing well outside of his comfort zone whilst trying to gently rebuke the Russians for doing exactly what he would’ve done.

“We believe in every part of the world of sentencing having some relation to the serious nature of the crime,” he said.  “Obviously, there’s, I think, widespread concern that this was perhaps too much and that were perhaps political considerations. We support around the world independent judiciaries, and we certainly take note of what’s happened.”

That’s telling them, Johnny!  Really tore a strip off of Putin‘s thick hide there. “We certainly take note of what’s happened.” Yes,  I can feel the Kremlin trembling from here.

Now John Baird has been a lot of things but, until now, a pussy footed weasel wasn’t one of them.  I almost feel sorry for the guy.  Having to say anything that might be construed as defending Pussy Riot when you know all he really wanted to say was, “You go, Vladimir!  Give those anarcho-sluts what they deserve! You can throw away the key, as far as I’m concerned.”

Well, I’m sure Stevie Harper will offer his best boy some consolation.  Maybe set him loose on that homo-loving United Church of Canada.  Hell, they might as well be foreign affairs …

All in all, a tough week for hate-wingers across the globe.   Thank god they didn’t ask Harper or Baird about the 34 striking miners slaughtered in South Africa.  You can only bite your tongue for so long before spilling blood.
